Dance4life Youth battle out their talent!

Here, thousands of people, aged 15-25 do the dance4life drill all over the world. And, they are connected via satellite.

Photographer- Paul Brocklehurst.

Poem by Lolisa- an HIV & AID's patient.

HIV is me
HIV is a part of me
Everyday, I learn more about HIV
Everyday, I see HIV
I know HIV, personally
I grew up really fast due to HIV
I cant wait for HIV, because it wont wait for me
I understand HIV and it understands me
I’m in love, in love with myself
HIV knows this, it knows me
HIV is as big as the tallest tree
But
I stand taller then HIV
HIV is smart it has it’s own mind
I walk on my own
I draw my own line
I’m positive that I don’t live with HIV
I am positive...
But...
HIV... It lives with me

This poem was written by a dance4life representative who is HIV positive and she now uses this as an advantage to help raise awareness about HIV & AID's.

some Figures

Some figures:

• Almost a quarter of people living with HIV/AIDS are between 15 and 25 years old; worldwide this means ten million young people.

• Every day, over 6,000 people between 15-24 years old are infected with HIV/AIDS

• Every twelve seconds a new infection takes place.

• 8,500 people die every day of AIDS related causes.

• Thousands of children lose their parents to HIV/AIDS.

• Only 31% of those in need of AIDS medication actually get it.

• 25 million people have already died of AIDS since 1981. According to the United Nations, this figure will be 280 million in 2050 if we do not act now.

• In 2007 2.1 million people died of an AIDS-related illness.

• 2.5 million new infections in 2007

• 90% of people living with HIV/AIDS live in countries of the Global South! At the end of 2007, women accounted for 50% of all adults living with HIV worldwide, and for 61% living in SUb Sharan Africa.

Information.

Millions of people around the world are living with HIV or AIDS. According to the statistics published by UNIADS/ WHO in November 2007, 33.2 Million people are estimated to live with HIV and AIDS. Young people (under 25 years olf) account for half of all new infections worlwide. Young people and those living in countries in the Global South are most affected. But what kind of illness is AIDS? Does everyone who contracts AIDS die? What is the difference between HIV and AIDS and how can you ensure that you don’t get it?

What is HIV?

HIV is the virus that can cause AIDS. It is the abbreviation of ‘Human Immuno Deficiency Virus’. It breaks down your body’s resistance. The white blood cells, which we all have to defend ourselves against illnesses, are broken down by HIV. You cannot die from HIV itself, but if you have it then you can become critically ill from viruses and bacteria which wouldn’t normally have serious effects.

What is AIDS?

The word AIDS is used only when the immune system of someone living with HIV is so broken-down that serious infections occur. AIDS is an abbreviation of ‘Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome’. The last three words, ‘Immuno Deficiency Syndrome’ indicate that AIDS is not one disease, but a ‘syndrome’, a ‘compound of diseases’ which are caused by ‘damage to the immune system’.
